sham ke pech-o-kham sitaron se
zina zina utar rahi hai raat
yun saba pas se guzarti hai
jaise kah di kisi ne pyar ki baat
sehn-e-zindan ke be-watan ashjar
sar-nigun mahw hain banane mein
daman-e-asman pe naqsh-o-nigar
shana-e-baam par damakta hai
mehrban chandni ka dast-e-jamil
khak mein ghul gai hai aab-e-nujum
nur mein ghul gaya hai arsh ka nil
sabz goshon mein nil-gun sae
lahlahate hain jis tarah dil mein
mauj-e-dard-e-firaq-e-yar aae
dil se paiham khayal kahta hai
itni shirin hai zindagi is pal
zulm ka zahr gholne wale
kaamran ho sakenge aaj na kal
jalwa-gah-e-visal ki shamen
wo bujha bhi chuke agar to kya
chand ko gul karen to hum jaanen
a prison nightfall
the night descends
step by silent step
down the stairway of stars.
the breeze goes by me
like a kindly whispered phrase.
the homeless trees of the prison yard
are absorbed making patterns
against the sky.
on the roof’s high crest
the loving hand of moonlight rest.
the starry river is drowned in dust
and the sky glows silver with moonlight.
in the dark foliage
shadows play with the wind
as a wave of painful loss
invades the heart.
defiantly
a thought tells me
how sweet life is at this instant:
those who brew the poison of cruelty
will not win
tomorrow or today.
they can put out the lamps
where lovers meet
they cannot blind the moon!

chand roz aur meri jaan faqat chand hi roz
zulm ki chhanw mein dam lene pe majbur hain hum
aur kuchh der sitam sah len tadap len ro len
apne ajdad ki miras hai mazur hain hum
jism par qaid hai jazbaat pe zanjiren hain
fikr mahbus hai guftar pe taziren hain
apni himmat hai ki hum phir bhi jiye jate hain
zindagi kya kisi muflis ki qaba hai jis mein
har ghadi dard ke paiwand lage jate hain
lekin ab zulm ki miad ke din thode hain
ek zara sabr ki fariyaad ke din thode hain
arsa-e-dahr ki jhulsi hui virani mein
hum ko rahna hai pe yunhi to nahin rahna hai
ajnabi hathon ka be-nam giran-bar sitam
aaj sahna hai hamesha to nahin sahna hai
ye tere husn se lipti hui aalam ki gard
apni do roza jawani ki shikaston ka shumar
chandni raaton ka bekar dahakta hua dard
dil ki be-sud tadap jism ki mayus pukar
chand roz aur meri jaan faqat chand hi roz
a few days more
my love
a few days more
my love
just a few days—
are we fated to live in tyranny's shadow.
let us endure a little longer—oppression
writhing
and tears.
all this is our legacy
we are helpless.
body imprisoned
emotions shackled
thought chained and speech censored.
it's just our courage that keeps us going.
life's a beggar's tunic that picks on
patches of pain each moment.
but now the days of tyranny are numbered.
just a little patience
since the days of entreaty are nearly done.
in this scorched wasteland of life
we're destined to live
but not like this.
this nameless
heavy oppression of alien hands
we may have to endure today
but not forever.
this dust of torments smearing yuor beauty—
this dwelling on frustration of our passing youth
this futile
throbbing pain of moonlit nights
this vain writhing of the heart
the body's helpless cry—
a few days more
