मुद्दत से इसी तरह निभी जाती है बाहम

at times i am cross with her, at times she with me
for ages we have managed in this manner mutually

करते हैं ग़लत यार से इज़हार-ए-वफ़ा हम
साबित जो हुआ इश्क़ कुजा यार कुजा हम

it is wrong of me to tell her of my loyalty
where is she and where am i, if love it proves to be

कुछ नश्शा-ए-मय से नहीं कम नश्शा-ए-नख़वत
तक़्वा में भी सहबा का उठाते हैं मज़ा हम

greater than headiness of wine is headiness of pride
for rapture more than alcohol does abstinence provide

मौजूद है जो लाओ जो मतलूब है वो लो
मुश्ताक़-ए-वफ़ा तुम हो तलबगार-ए-जफ़ा हम

give me what is present, take whatever you need
you desire faithfulness, being tortured is my creed

ने तब्अ' परेशाँ थी न ख़ातिर मुतफ़र्रिक़
वो दिन भी अजब थे कि हम और आप थे बाहम

untroubled was my temperament,my being was not undone
so full of wonder were those days, when you and i were one

क्या करते हैं क्या सुनते हैं क्या देखते हैं हाए
उस शोख़ के जब खोलते हैं बंद-ए-क़बा हम

what i do, what will i hear, what will i see at last
when that naughty damsel's gown i manage to unfast

ये तर्ज़-ए-तरन्नुम कहीं ज़िन्हार न ढूँडो
ऐ 'शेफ़्ता' या मुर्ग़-ए-चमन रखते हैं या हम
