मज़ा था हम को जो लैला से दू-ब-दू करते
कि गुल तुम्हारी बहारों में आरज़ू करते

would be a joy if you were there face to face with me
then flowers would, in springtime, seek you longingly

मज़े जो मौत के आशिक़ बयाँ कभू करते
मसीह ओ ख़िज़्र भी मरने की आरज़ू करते

if the joys of death in love, paramours narrate
jesus and khizr too will for death eagerly wait

ग़रज़ थी क्या तिरे तीरों को आब-ए-पैकाँ से
मगर ज़ियारत-ए-दिल क्यूँ कि बे-वज़ू करते

lustre from the arrow's gleam your glances did not need
but how could they enter my heart 'til they were cleansed indeed

अजब न था कि ज़माने के इंक़िलाब से हम
तयम्मुम आब से और ख़ाक से वज़ू करते

the tumult of this world's affairs, how could i escape
with sand ablution i perform, my hands with water scrape

अगर ये जानते चुन चुन के हम को तोड़ेंगे
तो गुल कभी न तमन्ना-ए-रंग-ओ-बू करते

if they had ever known they would, one by one, be rent
flowers would have never wished for colour or for scent

समझ ये दार-ओ-रसन तार-ओ-सोज़न ऐ मंसूर
कि चाक-ए-पर्दा हक़ीक़त का हैं रफ़ू करते

mansuur, think the scaffold, noose, as needle,thread forsooth
there to darn the tear within the veil of eternal truth

यक़ीं है सुब्ह-ए-क़यामत को भी सुबुही-कश
उठेंगे ख़्वाब से साक़ी सुबू सुबू करते

i am sure carousers would,on morn of judgement day
rouse from dreams crying out "more! more wine for me i say"

न रहती यूसुफ़-ए-कनआँ की गर्मी-ए-बाज़ार
मुक़ाबले में जो हम तुझ को रू-ब-रू करते

in a bidding war for yuusuf fervor wouldn't be there
if i had put you next to him for buyers to compare

चमन भी देखते गुलज़ार-ए-आरज़ू की बहार
तुम्हारी बाद-ए-बहारी में आरज़ू करते

the bloom of my desire's grove if gardens ever view
in springtime's breeze they all would, start to yearn for you

सुराग़ उम्र-ए-गुज़िश्ता का कीजिए गर 'ज़ौक़'
तमाम उम्र गुज़र जाए जुस्तुजू करते

zauq if one did search for clues of times that went before
all one's life would be spent seeking them once more
