कोई उम्मीद बर नहीं आती
कोई सूरत नज़र नहीं आती

no hope is there that now comes to light
nor is there any avenue in sight

मौत का एक दिन मुअय्यन है
नींद क्यूँ रात भर नहीं आती

when for death a day has been ordained
what reason that i cannot sleep all night?

आगे आती थी हाल-ए-दिल पे हँसी
अब किसी बात पर नहीं आती

nothing now could even make me smile,
i once could laugh at my heart's own plight

जानता हूँ सवाब-ए-ताअत-ओ-ज़ोहद
पर तबीअत इधर नहीं आती

virtues of restraint and prayer i know
but neither do my temperament excite

है कुछ ऐसी ही बात जो चुप हूँ
वर्ना क्या बात कर नहीं आती

do you think i know not how to speak?
there's something- my tongue i have to bite

क्यूँ न चीख़ूँ कि याद करते हैं
मेरी आवाज़ गर नहीं आती

when absence of my voice makes her pine
why then should i not shout with all my might?

दाग़-ए-दिल गर नज़र नहीं आता
बू भी ऐ चारागर नहीं आती

o healer does not any smell persist
if burning scars of heart are not in sight?

हम वहाँ हैं जहाँ से हम को भी
कुछ हमारी ख़बर नहीं आती

i'm at a place from where no news of me
now even to myself can come to light

मरते हैं आरज़ू में मरने की
मौत आती है पर नहीं आती

i die yearning as i hope for death
death does come to me but then not quite

काबा किस मुँह से जाओगे 'ग़ालिब'
शर्म तुम को मगर नहीं आती
