hum aaine ke samne jab aa ke hu karen

tar-damani pe shaikh hamari na jaiyo
daman nichod den to farishte wuzu karen

the moistness of my hem, o priest, deem not a minor thing
angels would perform ablution, if my hem i wring

sar-ta-qadam zaban hain jun shama go ki hum
par ye kahan majal jo kuchh guftugu karen

from head to toe i am a tongue / with a flame like style
but where is the courage that / i'd even speak a while?

har-chand aaina hun par itna hun na-qubul
munh pher le wo jis ke mujhe ru-ba-ru karen

though a mirror, i am shunned, to such a great degree
turns his face away, whoever's / brought in front of me

ne gul ko hai sabaat na hum ko hai e'tibar
kis baat par chaman hawas-e-rang-o-bu karen

flowers lack endurance and / i too am discontent
garden, on what ground should i / desire colour, scent?

hai apni ye salah ki sab zahidan-e-shahr
ai 'dard' aa ke baiat-e-dast-e-subu karen

this is my advice that all / the pious of the land
should come forth / and swear alleigance / to the goblet's hand
